Work has commenced on design and layout for the new Ethernal album, as well as a reissue of Winterfylleth's debut 'Ghost of Heritage' on Candlelight Records. Both bands are beacons for extreme metal in England and as always, I'm honoured that they have turned to me once again for their visual/packaging needs.

What better way to launch my new website/blog than to share with you my work on the latest release from Burzum - "From the Depths of Darkness".

If you're interested in a full account of methods and inspirations...

Burzum created what is, for me, the archetypal Black Metal album in “Hvis Lysett tar oss” and I must admit to being a long-time fan. So when I was given the opportunity to create the visual accompaniment to the latest release “From the Depths of Darkness”, and briefed on what the man behind Burzum – Varg Vikernes – wanted, my imagination immediately threw all kinds of ideas at me. The concept was to continue the saga begun by the first two album covers (“Burzum” and “Det som engang var”), thus I was required to use pencil only and elaborate with detail a vague, existing scene.

Yet more exciting than this was when I was asked to also illustrate the inside of the temple for the inner gatefold of the vinyl/CD. This was to be done in the same style but here my imagination could run wild, with no existing scene or imagery to mimic. My guiding light (or should that be "guiding dark" in this case) came from the colder, darker, less-human corners of my mind… with perhaps a small sprinkling of Tolkien for good measure.

Both works were completed in 2010 over the course of several weeks. The layout for the packaging was finished in 2011 when release date was established.

Upon release of the album, Terrorizer magazine chose to print a small feature about my work. They asked how I drew the cover of “Det som engang var” with the vision of the future, it being 20 years gone by and how the building is in ruins. This is the answer I gave them (though it will undoubtedly appear in edited form in the magazine):

“Varg gave me a lot of freedom, simply requesting a close-up of the entrance to the temple gate in a similar style to the ‘Burzum’ and ‘Det Som…’ cover art. My immediate thought was that I wanted to do more than simply recreate the temple as previously depicted. I wanted to inject detail, to fill in the gaps that the lack of pre-existing detail left to the imagination. To me it was important to capture a vivid atmosphere – just as the music does, without rival - and to contribute to the enigmatic back-story behind this sequence of illustrations. Varg told me he wanted this to be the third in the succession of cover drawings, relating to the fact that the songs are re-recordings of those present on the first two. The hooded figure moves closer to the gate, but I had this strange vision in my head – inspired by otherworldy concepts in faerie and folklore – of the temple itself existing in a different timescale to the hooded figure; so it might be decaying at an extremely fast rate compared to the speed at which the mysterious figure moved. Also, this is a window to this other ‘Burzumic’ world, and by demonstrating how this other world evolves and decays alongside our mundane one, when revisited nearly 20 years later, I hoped to enliven it.”

Burzum CD Reissues

Burzum's back catalogue was reissued on CD with new, matching slipcases. The jewelcase booklets featured the original cover art but with new lyric layout and on-body designs.

Burzum - 'Deities' T-Shirt Range

Applying directions directly from Burzum, I here developed a range of matching t-shirt designs based on archaic European gods. Each features a relevant rune and symbol.
